Kekova

Kekova Sunken City - Batık Şehir
The manager of hotel Kıyak
in Kale (Demre), was most helpful in organizing a private boat trip to
the island of Kekova and Simena Kale. The full day trip started from Demre's small
harbor Çayağzı,
at about 5 km from the centre of Demre. After passing the ruins of ancient
Andriake, the small boat left the mouth of the Androkos river and headed for
Pirates' Cave, the obligatory blue cave. During the tour there was ample opportunity to
swim and take a drink at the idyllic blue waters of Burç
Bay which means tower in Turkish, a kind of pirates nest with a medieval
castle dominating the bay.
Although the scenery was
magnificent for the entire trip, the highlight of the tour was
undoubtedly sailing with the glass-bottomed boat over the submerged ruins of the World Heritage site of the
Sunken City (in Turkish Batık Şehir
or Batık Kent) at Kekova island.
Little is known of Kekova's history and even the name the sunken city
remains a secret.
More on Kekova and its history can be
