Turkey is a vast country with a total area of 814,578 sq. km. Apart from the Russian Federation, Turkey is the only country that is located both in Europe (Thrace) and Asia (Anatolia). Turkey offers all the characteristics of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean countries intermingled with the pecularities of the Balkans and the trans-Caucasian countries. The country is a genuine paradise for historians and archeologists. As is shown by the thousands of photos on this website, Turkey is virtually filled up with the remains of the ancient civilizations that flourished here. Hattis, Hittites, Assyrians, Urartians, Phrygians, Lydians, Lycians, Ionians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Armenians, Seljuk and Ottoman Turks, all came and left their mark. Present day Turkey is a fascinating country full of contrasts and contradictions. It carefully balances between the East and the West, between the past and the future, between secularism and Islam, between wealth and poverty, between chaos and serenity. These fascinating contrasts combined with Turkey's thousands of kilometers of magnificent coast with fine beaches, the guaranteed sunshine and the excellent Turkish cuisine have turned Turkey into an increasingly popular tourist destination.
For more than 25 years, I have been fascinated by Turkey and its people and spent many holidays touring around Turkey. During my vacations in Turkey, I encountered a hospitality that has become rare in other parts of the world. In addition, the excellent public transport system makes travelling around Turkey not only very comfortable but actually a real pleasure.
This website is primarily intended to share my travel experiences in Turkey and to show my photo albums with the thousands of pictures that I shot. An additional goal of the website is to guide others to plan a travel to Turkey or just simply want to spend their beach vacation in a seaside hotel, but want to be informed about Turkey's history and culture.
Above all this website is to honor the generous people that I met when travelling through Turkey. This website was named Anatolia, which in ancient Greek means place of the rising sun and refers to the largest (97%) part of Turkey in Asia also known as the peninsula of Asia Minor.
People often ask me travel tips for Turkey and this website contains some. For instance, about the best time to travel to Turkey, I personally prefer late May and June or September. While September is excellent for the Aegean and Mediterranean areas, for the Black Sea region September can sometimes be rainy. Most of all, one should definitely avoid traveling to Turkey in the months July and August, not temperatures are uncomfortably high, there is also the crowd that comes mostly with package tours.
